European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI)

Database
DESCRIPTION
EMBL-EBI is Europe’s flagship open-data hub for life science: it operates core INSDC services (ENA), genome annotation and browsing (Ensembl), protein knowledge (UniProt), functional-genomics archives (BioStudies, Expression Atlas), human variation submission (EVA), structural biology (PDBe), chemical biology (ChEMBL), and literature discovery (Europe PMC), alongside training and APIs. Many resources federate with global partners (NCBI, DDBJ, SIB) and with controlled-access archives such as the EGA for sensitive human data.
ENA
https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/browser/home
European Nucleotide Archive—INSDC member archive for raw reads, assemblies, and annotated sequences; exchanges metadata and accessions with GenBank and DDBJ.
UniProt
https://www.uniprot.org/
Curated protein sequence and functional annotation resource (UniProtKB, proteomes, isoforms); joint EMBL-EBI, SIB, and PIR.
Ensembl
https://www.ensembl.org/
Genome browser and annotation for vertebrates and selected model organisms—genes, variants, comparative genomics, and REST/API access aligned with reference assemblies.
BioStudies
https://www.ebi.ac.uk/biostudies/
Study-centric metadata warehouse for life-science experiments; hosts and links ArrayExpress-style functional-genomics studies alongside imaging and other modalities.
Expression Atlas
https://www.ebi.ac.uk/gxa/
Baseline and differential expression summaries from RNA-seq and microarray studies, with reproducible pipelines and cross-study query.
EVA
https://www.ebi.ac.uk/eva/
European Variation Archive—open repository for VCF-scale genetic variant submissions with study-level metadata, complementing reference browsers.
Europe PMC
https://europepmc.org/
Literature and preprint search with full-text open-access articles, grants, and links to molecular datasets cited in papers.

European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA)

Database
DESCRIPTION
Federated archive for sensitive human genomes and phenotypes (member institutions across Europe and beyond).

German Human Genome-Phenome Archive (GHGA)

Database
DESCRIPTION
National federated archive for human omics under controlled access.
